Silverstone Technology Cluster

26th February 2021

The State of Play: Batteries event, jointly held by the STC’s Digital & Advanced Manufacturing and Future Mobility Special Interest Groups (SIG) highlighted the cluster’s capabilities in battery production and development.

Future Mobility SIG Champion Simon Holloway from RML Group compered the event and also gave the opening presentation, showcasing the capabilities and developments at RML Group, Delta Motorsport and Danecca. Simon was joined by Simon Dowson from Delta and Danson Joseph from Danecca for the presentation and subsequent Q&A.

This was followed by an in-depth presentation by Birmingham University’s Emma Kendrick who explained how her work has enabled greater consistency, cost savings and reduced waste throughout the electrode manufacturing process utilising digital manufacturing processes and real-time metrology.

Sam Haig, Battery Recycling Business Manager at RS Bruce then looked at current and future technologies for batteries recycling and the various issues that need to be addressed as battery production in the UK is ramping up.

After the networking break, Fergal Harrington Beatty from AMTE Power shared with us their work on the next generation of high-performance cells and their efforts to establish their new production facility.

Last but not least, Andrew Britton from UKBIC showcased this new facility and the various resources available to companies looking to get into, or expand, their battery production operations.

Simon Holloway commented: ‘We had a really good number of registrations and attendees and the level of engagement with the Q&A sessions was great. This was a really good event to highlight the capabilities within the cluster. With the on-line networking I know people managed to connect with some great contacts so that element worked well and will further opportunities within the cluster. A fantastic event, all in all.’
