Hoare Lea, a global player in engineering in the built environment, has become the first business in its sector to join the STC’s membership.

The firm has close to 1,000 employees and has recently opened an office in Milton Keynes – its twelfth in the UK.

Hoare Lea’s industry-leading work involves design consultancy across a variety of sectors and specialisms, such as MEP (mechanical, electrical, and public health engineering), acoustics, energy, lighting, security and building intelligence. Its building projects range from world cup stadiums and transformational science facilities to film studios and schools.

“There’s a real buzz in the STC area – both the Cluster and the wider Oxford-Cambridge Arc. It’s a global talent pool, and we know the impact that connecting with the most influential people will have on the region’s success,” commented Hoare Lea Partner Miles Freeman, who heads up the new Milton Keynes office.

“The Oxford-Cambridge Arc is all about bringing together a range of cutting-edge sectors to galvanise technological advances that will change the way we live, work, and respond to our planet. We’re focused on bringing together these fundamental needs: how spaces perform for the people who use them, along with the energy and flexibility needs that will keep them sustainable for as long as possible.”

Indeed, the specialist skills of businesses within the STC, innovating in areas such as low-carbon technologies, is a key element of Hoare Lea’s work.

Miles added: “Net zero carbon is a big challenge for businesses, and they need proper holistic strategies. We’re acutely aware of how vital cross-sector collaboration is to tackle this global challenge. So, it’s an interesting time – one that demands new ways of working from all sectors… and that’s something we’re excited by, particularly in terms of access to the data and technological developments that businesses in the Cluster and Arc might have.

“Without doubt, many of the sectors in the STC and Arc region align with our areas of expertise in the built environment and we’re excited to start joining the dots…”
