STC members hail “revolutionary” Amazon Web Services Digital Innovation Programme

Silverstone Technology Cluster members have praised Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) Digital Innovation Programme – brought to them via the STC – for providing a refreshing perspective on how to bring new products to market faster.

Interestingly, the programme led those taking part to work backwards from their customers’ needs, whilst applying tried and tested Amazon innovation mechanisms.

Lemsford Mills Controls and Claytex are among the businesses to benefit from the programme’s online sessions presented by AWS Digital Innovation team, which itself joined the STC membership last autumn.

Part of the programme featured ‘Working Backwards Sprint’ sessions, which Lemsford Mills Control’s General Manager Theo Koutsounis says was “a fantastic experience and a revolutionary process”. The business, based in Welwyn Garden City, is a world leader in the design and manufacture of electrical control panels.

Theo explained: “The programme helped us explore and align on our specific end-customer requirements using tested Amazon methods.

“Thanks to the talented and engaging AWS Digital Innovation Lead, Rob Hodges and his team, we shaped our new digital offering and defined a new solution that meets our customer’s most pressing need.

Having created a press release and FAQs (frequently asked questions) document together with AWS, we are now heading towards the next stage of testing and proving the concept with our customers.

I cannot recommend the service enough to SMEs that are currently in the process of developing a new product or service.”

Meanwhile, Claytex specialises in modelling and simulation in systems engineering at its Leamington Spa premises.

MD Mike Dempsey reflected: “It was interesting to see how Amazon approach innovation with their ‘working backwards’ process which has you start the innovation process by writing a press release to announce the new product you’re going to create.

“The process gets you to consider the features and benefits that the customer wants to realise and describe these in the press release, before thinking about the details of how to implement the product.

“This was a really interesting approach to help us define the next versions of the products we want to release next year.

“Now we are trying to work out how to architect and design the product to deliver the benefits with support from an AWS Solution Architect.”

Meanwhile, the STC has confirmed a second opportunity for its members to join AWS’ next ‘Working Backwards Sprint’ week commencing 20 June. CLICK HERE for more details.

STC CEO Pim van Baarsen said he was delighted that Amazon Web Services’ very first programme to support businesses across the STC region had proved so successful.

Pim enthused: “It’s fantastic that the programme has been so well received from both sides – Amazon Web Services have told us they are delighted with how it’s gone and the feedback from members has been very positive.

“It’s great that the STC is working with the likes of Amazon Web Services to bring programmes to our membership and help the companies, which is exactly what we’re here for.

“Following the success of this, we are now looking to develop future opportunities with AWS for our members.”
