Start-ups & SMEs revelling in STC offering

Silverstone Technology Cluster

2nd May 2018

Less than 18 months after its launch the Silverstone Technology Cluster’s membership is now at the 70 mark.

STC CEO Pim van Baarsen reported many of the companies to sign up were small-medium sized and operating in electronics, software, IT and additive manufacturing.

Among those to join has been DaniHar Technology Ltd in Irthlingborough which specialises in electronic design and software applications from embedded software to user interfaces and data management.

“We set up in 2015 with growth ambitions and previously were previous members of a business club, unfortunately it didn’t work for us. Finally it’s nice to be in a group of like-minded people who get what we do – especially with the industry boom in electronic vehicles,” explains Managing Director Andy Long.

“One of the core reasons we’ve joined is because if we want to grow we know we need to get together collaboratively with people and grow with them.

“Another is because we are able to tap into some great guidance on branding and positioning in the market place from people who really know their stuff. We’re now working on this with Sally Povolotsky (a champion of the STC’s Autonomous, Connected, Electrified & Shared special interest group).”

He adds: “We’ve had a meeting now with a big potential customer in nanotechnology coatings who themselves are seeing the value of the STC.

“The STC can also help small businesses with overheads – seems to be unique in gaining us access to hot desking facilities or meeting rooms. We recently brought a potential customer to Silverstone Park for a meeting and it’s terrific – way better than trying to do business in a hotel lobby!”

Lichfield based meltd3d (soon to be re-branded as Mackart Additive) is another to join. It specialises in additive manufacturing and founder Steve McCarthy is clear on the benefits of being an STC member.

“Exposure, generation of business, networking, contacts – it opens up a lot of doors when we consider who we could partner with as customers and suppliers,” he comments.

“We are a relatively new company so need exposure to develop our presence and credibility. It can be difficult to have conversations on a cold call but things become easier when you are in the same club.

And Steve enthuses: “The STC is a fantastic idea. It focuses on a wider geographic but the Silverstone name gives it added credibility – I’ve now met with people from Formula 1 teams and it wouldn’t have been possible to have those conversations otherwise.”
