16th March 2021

On March 16th the STC’s Design, Simulation and Metrology Special Interest Group (SIG) held an event with a focus on Brexit and its implications and opportunities.

Led by SIG Champion David Brown from Hexagon, the event provided valuable insights from a number of high calibre speakers;

Grant Thornton‘s Oliver Bridge explained how the EU-UK trade deal and new regulations will accelerate the adoption of UK sourced technology and products in the automotive sector. Oliver also highlighted what UK companies should be looking at now to ensure they make the most of the opportunity in the coming years.

This was followed by a valuable presentation from MAKE UK specialist expert on international employment and mobility, IEM‘s Alice Tranter who detailed how employing and retaining non-UK talent and overseas business travel have been affected, and what companies need to be aware of going forward.

Keith Fawdington, Managing Director at Uvamed outlined how, as a company that exports nearly 85% of its production output to the EU, they have dealt with the changes and adjusted their policies and operations to suit.

Following a networking break, a roundtable featuring Red Bull Racing’s Head of Procurement Charles Bamlett, Steve Finn, Managing Director at DMG MORI and Hexagon Operations Director Adam Moorhouse, who talked about how Brexit had affected their businesses, what they put in place to deal with it, as well as some of the new opportunities that had emerged as a result.

“It was a very powerful event” commented David. “There was a lot there for the attendees to take on board, and it was good to see that some positive opportunities have emerged as well. This was a little bit of an unusual event for our SIG as it had much more of a business focus than we normally have, but we felt it was worthwhile to organise this as there is a lot for companies to take into account as several of the presentations highlighted, and the feedback we have received indicated it was very worthwhile.”
