As a member of the Battery Management Systems Team, the Controls Engineer would be contributing to the successful development of Delta’s in-house Battery Management System software.

With a primary focus on high-performance battery systems, the software developed will be for a range of battery vehicle applications (automotive, motorsport, marine, aerospace, and off-highway).

The Battery Management Systems Team is responsible for delivering the software on the BMS, including both safety and application specific software functions, at a high-quality standard that has been coded according to our internal guidelines & standards, and tested with our offline & rig testing capabilities.

This role will suit a candidate that will work well in a team, able to communicate with other departments, and take initiative to think “outside of the box” to resolve some of the unique challenges we face on our prototype development systems.


  • Development of battery management system software algorithms in Mathworks’ Matlab/Simulink environment
  • Development of embedded software for microcontrollers in C (NXP, Texas Instruments): peripherals, bootloaders, SOTA
  • Communication with the Test & Development team on cell testing requirements to feed battery models/maps
  • Support the Test & Development team during battery system commissioning sign-off
  • Able to be flexible on work location and prepared to travel within the UK and internationally on short assignments
  • Documenting & reporting battery system architecture & algorithm developments to the Head of Battery Management Systems


  • Knowledge of battery system architectures and battery management systems
  • Experience of using model-based development languages such as Matlab & Simulink
  • Experience in developing embedded software for microcontrollers in C
  • Knowledge of battery system algorithms such as state of charge, state of power, state of health, state of function, fault diagnostics, contactor control etc.
  • Ability to generate battery system commissioning & validation sign-off plans
  • Data analysis & reporting on system performance
  • Proactive, self-motivated with a keen attention for detail
  • Willing to learn new skills & problem solve on exciting, technically challenging projects


  • Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline
  • Experience of working on HaV systems, particularly in HaV battery packs at 400/800V
  • Familiar with laboratory equipment and test facilities
  • Experience in compliance engineering to external standards, such as battery handling, EMC, vehicle safety, functional safety IS026262 etc.
  • Familiar with measurement, calibration & diagnostic CAN software tools such as Vector’s software suite (CANalyser, CANape, CANoe).
  • Exposure to other coding languages (C, C++, C#, Python)
  • Familiar with good software practices, coding standards, version control/management, issue tracking, and testing
  • Basic knowledge of electronics & embedded microcontrollers (Texas Instruments, STMicroelectronics, NXP, Analogue Devices)
  • Minimum 1 – 2 years experience in a full time engineering role
