The Department for Work & Pensions has approved the STC as one of its ‘Kickstart Gateways’.

In total, the 19 members on whose behalf the STC applied will be able to offer apprenticeship placements to 30 young people in the region.

The Government Kickstart Scheme will provide funding to employers to create job placements for 16-24 year olds. The scheme will create new six-month placements for young people who are currently on Universal Credit and at risk of long-term unemployment. The job placements should support the participants to develop the skills and experience they need to find work after completing the scheme.

The government will fully fund each ‘Kickstart’ job, paying 100% of the age-relevant National Minimum Wage, National Insurance and pension contributions for 25 hours a week.

Any organisation, regardless of size, can apply for funding.

The job placements created with Kickstart funding must be new jobs. They must not:

  • replace existing or planned vacancies
  • cause existing employees or contractors to lose or reduce their employment

Each application should include how you will help the participants to develop their skills and experience, including:

  • support to look for long-term work, including career advice and setting goals
  • support with CV and interview preparations
  • helping the participant with basic skills, such as attendance, timekeeping and teamwork

Once a job placement is created, it can be taken up by a second person once the first successful applicant has completed their six-month term.

There is also £1,500 per job placement available for setup costs, support and training.

“This gives 30 young people from the region each an incredible opportunity – to gain invaluable experience with some of the most innovative high-tech businesses in the country.

“In turn, this can give many of them the boost they need in terms of gaining skills that then help take them to the next stage of a career.

“An important part of the criteria is also that employers provide them with the crucial basic skills training, such as time-keeping, application and paperwork, such as CVs.

“I’d like to say ‘thank you’ to all those members who have offered to invest their time and energy to train up these young people – I am sure they also stand to benefit from the experience.”
