Mental Health at Work

Mental Health at work, it’s always been important, however, with increasing endorsement from high profile people including the Royal Family, mental health is being talked about more than ever before and is no longer a “taboo” subject.

It’s at the top of the agenda for many employers and rightly so. According, to the mental health charity, Mind, at least one in six employees experience mental health problems including anxiety and stress. Research conducted by Mind also found that more than one in five (21%) employees have called in sick to avoid work when dealing with mental health issues. This can have a damaging affect on organisations with regards to productivity and the creation of a positive environment for employees to work within.

By supporting employees and promoting better mental health in the workplace, employers can strive to reduce the number of sick days, increase productivity and create a positive environment for employees. Here are a few tips on how to support employees and promote better mental health:

  • Lead from the top – get senior figures within your organisation on-board by sending a clear message that well-being within the workplace is a high priority
  • Consider appointing “mental health champions”
  • Implement polices on grievances, communication, sickness absence and occupational health
  • Encourage your employees to take regular breaks away from their workstations
  • What’s on the menu? Encourage employees to have a nutritious diet and drink water
  • Encourage employees to exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes per day – set up an inter-organisation challenge such as 10,000 steps per day
  • Offer free health checks and ensure employees have access to external organisations who offer support
  • Hold regular meetings with your employees to discuss their workloads and any issues they may have
  • A problem shared is often a problem halved – operate an open door policy
  • Get flexible – consider the working hours and location of your employees. Can you be more flexible?
