Meet the Board: Simon Arkell, EMW Law

Silverstone Technology Cluster

Fascinating fact: one of the STC Board used to race dinghies against sailors who have gone on to win Olympic gold for Team GB. Meet Simon Arkell…

Firstly; the day job. For more than 15 years Simon has been a corporate lawyer for EMW Law, based at its UK HQ in Milton Keynes where he is now also a partner in the business (some 150 people work there).

Much of his role includes guiding companies through sales and acquisitions, those receiving investment, stakeholders when leaving a business and other clients in ‘scale-up mode’. He and his colleagues can handle transactions worth up to many tens of millions of pounds.

Simon has represented EMW on the Board since the STC’s inception in early 2017.

“The STC is such a great local project for us to further our experience and knowledge of the types of business joining the cluster and we jumped at the chance to help assist its direction by being at the board table,” he says.

“The business development perspective is a part of my day job that I really enjoy and the STC really adds to that. I’m a bit of a tech nerd anyway so getting under the skin of the types of businesses we keep discovering in the Cluster, listening to what they are trying to achieve and becoming trusted advisors is really working for us.”

Away from work, Simon and his family (including wife Kate and ten-year-old son Jake) are big fans of the great outdoors.

And he adds: “We are an outdoors family and not what you’d call ‘mainstream’. I suppose our perfect week would be some snowboarding followed by some sailing and then jumping on an aeroplane back to the UK to go mountain biking in the forests in Wales or the Lake District!

“It was actually through sailing that I met my wife. I grew up as a sailor and competed in national and international dinghy sailing championships. When I was 14 I raced against Ben Ainsley and even represented Great Britain in the European Championships! Ben carried on and went on to Olympic fame; I became a solicitor. Looking back I suppose I was at a level where I could have had a go at following him, but it was not to be…”
