Role and Business Summary:

The Microwave Materials business forms part of the BAE SYSTEMS Advanced Technology Solutions organisation. The role of the materials team in the Microwave Materials Group is to conduct research into novel and innovative materials that often operate in areas such as Aerospace, Land and Maritime applications.

This is an opportunity to join a dynamic and focused team working at the forefront of materials technology. The successful candidate will desire a role which requires creativity to produce proof of concept solutions for advanced active applications.

Candidates MUST be able to attain Full UK Security Clearance with no restrictions.

Typical Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will contribute to a variety of activities to support the research and development of new technologies to help grow the technology capabilities of the business. Likely tasks include:

• Undertake the application-driven R&D of emerging materials technologies for use in active domains (e.g. Aerospace, Maritime etc.).
• Ability to liaise with customers in order to identify requirements to match up technology proof of concept solutions which will then be deployed to meet the customers’ demands.
• Liaising with internal and external stakeholders, which can include business customers, industrial catapult centres, academia, supply chain among others to identify solutions that meet customer requirements.
• Preparation of technical reports and presentations and present to internal and external stakeholders.
• Carry out and oversee the fabrication, measurement and analysis of materials.
• Proactively supporting the measurement and characterisation of new product innovations to grow the BAE Systems Microwave Materials business.
• Working with R&D teams to transfer product innovations from laboratory to the Production prototype.
• Manage workload between laboratory-based experimentation and other office-based duties.

Your Skills, Knowledge, and Experience Behaviour:

Essential:

• Degree/ Post Grad (BSc/BEng, MSc + 1 Year’s industrial experience OR PhD) qualified in STEM subject, with a focus on Material Sciences.
• Possesses good communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Candidate must be self-driven with the ability to set and achieve SMART goals and deadlines in line with the company’s strategic objectives.
• A Positive, can-do attitude and willingness to learn.
• Able to work both as part of a team and autonomously where required.
• Experience (Academic or Industrial) making significant contributions to material-based research projects.

Desirable (but not Essential)

• Knowledge of Formulation Chemistry (paints, inks etc.).
• A good understanding of polymer chemistry.
• Experience working in a Catapult centre-like institution with focus on applied sciences.
• Previous experience in process development.
• Membership of a recognised technical institute (e.g. RAeS, IOM3, RSC or equivalent).
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft packages and data analysis tools.
• Understanding of Engineering documentation and control
