Role and Business Summary:

The Microwave Materials business forms part of the BAE SYSTEMS Advanced Technology Solutions (ATS) organisation. The role of the materials team in the Microwave Materials Group is to conduct research into innovative materials and technologies which will be incorporated into next generation products for the ATS business.

This is an opportunity to join a dynamic and focused team working to accelerate Manufacturing prototypes through to Productionised solutions.

Candidates will need to be able to attain Full UK Security Clearance with no restrictions.


Typical Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will contribute to a variety of activities to support the research and development of new technologies to help grow the technology capabilities of the business, with a key focus on “Design for Manufacture”. Likely tasks include:

  • The translation of requirements into working, manufacturable, cost effective and efficient solutions.
  • Oversee and undertake the manufacture of composite components in the early stages of product maturity.
  • The creation and release of Product Design data for the purpose of Manufacturing.
  • Expanding on current business capability to enhance product portfolio.
  • To ensure that BAES remain compliant with external legislation, e.g. AS9100.
  • Facilitate implementation of Manufacturing processes into a Production environment.
  • Preparation of technical reports, presentations and presenting to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Carry out and oversee the fabrication, measurement and analysis of materials.
  • Liaise with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Supporting bid work to capture opportunities and costings for manufacture through developing products on the shop-floor.
  • Utilisation of plant machinery and equipment to develop next generation products.
  • Hands-on run through debug processes.
  • Define and optimise new product processes through hands-on iterative improvements.

Your Skills, Knowledge, and Experience Behaviour:


  • HNC/ HND with Industrial Experience (2+ Years within relevant industry).
  • Possesses good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A Positive, can-do attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Candidate must be self-driven with the ability to set and achieve SMART goals and deadlines in line with the company’s strategic objectives.
  • Able to work both as part of a team and autonomously where required.
  • A general interest in Materials Science, particularly in the field of elastomers, composites and/or polymers.
  • An understanding of the importance of safe working practises.
  • An appreciation for the importance of maintaining high quality products.

Desirable (but not Essential)

  • Previous experience working in a materials related role with the Aerospace industry or within a Technology catapult environment and degree (typically BSc/ BEng + 2 years’ experience OR MSc/ PhD).
  • Previous experience working with and designing composite components (ideally within the Aerospace industry).
  • Membership of a recognised technical institute (e.g. RAeS, IOM3 or equivalent).
  • MSc/ PhD in materials related discipline is desirable, but not required.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft packages and data analysis tools.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings (training will be provided if required).
  • CAD experience (Catia v5 is a plus).
  • Experience (Academic or Industrial) in technical leadership of material-based research projects.
  • An understanding of Engineering of documentation and control procedures.
