Howes Percival Cambridge Partner appointed as County Court Recorder

Howes Percival LLP

21st October 2020

Howes Percival partner Michael Green has been appointed as a Recorder on the London and South East circuit, in the latest round of appointments announced by the Lord Chief Justice this month.

Recorders are part-time judges in the Crown or County Court, whose jurisdiction is similar to that of a circuit judge. They sit on larger trials in open court and hear appeals. They are appointed by the Queen on the recommendation of the Lord Chancellor.

Appointment to recorder level in the judiciary is generally seen as the domain of barristers and QCs and it is a rare that solicitors are appointed to this level. Traditionally, only around 6% of Recorders are solicitors, with the Law Society Gazette reporting in the last week that this has risen to 10% in the latest raft of appointments, with most solicitor appointees being from City firms.

Michael Green is a litigation and insolvency specialist with over 20 years’ experience of dealing with large complex commercial disputes. He was appointed as a Deputy District Judge in January 2013 and granted a Chancery Ticket by the Vice Chancellor in 2014. Michael has sat upon a number of Chancery Trials in recent years and was, in 2019, appointed to the panel of approved deputies for Chancery and ICC work in Central London, sitting at the Royal Courts of Justice.

Michael Green commented,

“I have enjoyed immensely my time sitting as a part-time judge over the last 7 years. I am delighted to take this next step on the judicial ladder. It is encouraging also to see the number of solicitor applicants rising.

“It is a part-time appointment, and so my primary focus remains Howes Percival and serving clients of the firm. I think that having a solicitor in a judicial role is something that benefits clients of our firm in bringing that experience from the other side of the Bench to each case. I also believe that it has made me a better lawyer and it is a further endorsement of our first-rate litigation team at Howes Percival. I’m very grateful to the firm for supporting my career in the judiciary and my application to become a Recorder.”
