Game Changing Tech at Design, Simulation and Metrology SIG Event

Silverstone Technology Cluster

14th June 2021

On Thursday June 10th, attendees to the ‘Disruptive and Future Innovations’ Special Interest Group event were treated to presentations on breakthrough technology and glimpses on what lies ahead in the future.

Proceedings started with a fascinating presentation by Dr Geraint Morgan from the Open University, who talked about his inventions and developments made for various space missions and how the technology developed there is deployed in ‘on-earth’ platforms and sectors, including the emerging hydrogen economy.

After an enlightening Q&A session with the event compere, Wirth Research’s Rob Rowsell, the next speaker, Filomeno Martina from WAAM3D showcased their latest advances in metal additive manufacturing. He also detailed their recently developed metrology in the loop system, which is a major steppingstone to enabling cost effective metal 3D printing at scale.

Tim Gears from Hexagon then shared how their latest metrology developments to calibrate robots are allowing them to morph this technology in various other areas.

Wirth Research’s Guilio Vita presented after the networking break and explained about their innovative ‘wind engineering’ solutions that help reduce the impact of microclimates on building costs, energy usage and carbon footprint.

Last but not least we were joined by Jerome Maurey-Delaunay from game engine company Unity, who presented on how their engine and world builder are being utilised in different sectors to achieve better simulation results and more streamlined design processes.

“This was a fascinating event where we got to hear about some really interesting technologies and their applications” commented Rob Rowsell. “It is through these kinds of horizontal innovations that we can see significant leaps forward, and it was interesting to learn what is being done in other areas that has a wider impact than you would initially think.”
