Commercial meetings with Indian & Chinese delegations for STC businesses

Member businesses experienced the global pull of the organisation in July when they were invited to meet with senior trade delegates from India and China.

The STC’s links with the Department for International Trade (DIT) led to a visit from Sujith Thomas, Senior Trade & Investment Advisor (Automotive) for India’s High Commission.

Businesses were able to present to Sujith while he updated them on the automotive and advanced engineering landscape in Chennai (his appointed region).

Stéphane Lambotte, International Trade Adviser (high performance technology specialist) for the DIT said there had been a positive knock-on effect for the businesses.

“Six companies presented and two of them are now in discussions with Sujith to see how they might develop ties,” he explained. “This includes potential investment from them as businesses in the UK to India and vice-versa and collaborating with Indian companies to spearhead development of technologies to the Indian market.” Stéphane continued: “Indian companies, because of an emphasis from their government, are looking to a lot of the technology and innovation in the STC and the wider Cambridge-Oxford ‘Arc’ – areas such as electric vehicles, low carbon energy, light weighting, designing elegant solutions to some difficult problems, and efficiency.

“Certainly with its cluster, the STC has created a crucible where companies can come and flourish and learn from one another.

“Similarly, the STC and DIT are able to enjoy strong ties – we work well together because we can learn from one another and have complimentary skills.”

The above event was held at STC founding member Silverstone Park’s Innovation Centre – as was a second for senior Chinese government ministers and industry representatives from Beijing and the City of Tangshan. They heard from a number of STC businesses including Delta Motorsport and RML as well as specialist technology development companies and component manufacturers.

STC member the Sino-British Trade Alliance hosted the event. Its CEO André González De Savage said: “The Chinese high performance technology sector is a fast growth area and the investment potential is significant and outnumbers that of many sizeable nations.

“During their visit – expressly planned to develop strong links with the UK – the delegation confirmed a series of trade & enterprise agreements and it is clear that the UK and particularly the STC region is of vibrant appeal.” The Chinese delegation’s official welcome to Northamptonshire was endorsed by the county’s Lord-Lieutenant David Laing.
