STC member Claytex has secured government funding to develop a virtual driving test for autonomous baggage tugs at UK airports.

Claytex was one of 23 businesses to be awarded a Transport Technology Research Innovation Grant (T-TRIG) by the Department for Transport, as part of its 2020 competition.

MD Mike Dempsey explained: “We are working with a number of UK airports and airlines on this… it’s all about how, as an operator, you can define the test for an autonomous baggage tug, and then put it through that test so you can be certain it will safely do the job required.

“Obviously, there are a number of expensive things ‘airside’ that you wouldn’t want them to be bumping into…”

The Leamington Spa business, which employs 15 staff, will now begin developing the tests using its rFpro based driving simulation tools.

Claytex is a renowned name in the world of virtually simulating vehicle behaviour with successful projects already carried out in Formula 1 and the automotive industry. It has also used its knowledge to work in other sectors such as drone flight and the built environment.

Mike added: “We’ve won a number of grants from Innovate UK in the past, but this is the first one we’ve achieved with the Department for Transport.

“We’re excited about this project and the interest it is generating…”
