The first businesses to recruit apprentices through the STC’s successful Kickstart Scheme application have spoken highly of the quality of their young new trainees.

Electric Assisted Vehicles Ltd (EAV) manufactures e-cargo bikes and focuses on other R&D projects to meet requirements of future transport solutions.

It has recruited 22-year-old Oliver Coulling-Green at its Heyford Park base in a Junior Build Technician role.

EAV Director Leigh Barmby said: “Joanne (Clement) at the STC has been liaising with us throughout, and our combined determination to get involved with Kickstart has been evident; her support has been outstanding.

“STC have helped assist us through the Kickstart process, managing relevant paperwork for us. As a result, we have found Oliver who we wouldn’t have found otherwise which adds to our output and capability as we expand in manufacturing and R&D.

“We need to recruit and, for 25 weeks a year, the Kickstarter salary really helps.

“The STC has made the whole process so clear and I can’t thank them enough. I see us keeping Oliver on after his six-month probation period.”

PUNCH Flybrid, which innovates in energy storage and hybrid flywheel technology, has used Kickstart to take on its first apprentice, 22-year-old Douglas Arthur, as a Generator Set Technician.

MD Tobias Knichel said: “Thanks to the Silverstone Technology Cluster, we now have another valued member of the PUNCH Flybrid team.”

“Recently making us aware of the Kickstart programme, which was a very simple process from start to finish, we were able to recruit a very keen and local technician.”

“Although Douglas has only been with us a short period of time, he has already learnt valuable skills and been able to offer off-site support, which we hope will progress him through to a career he wishes to pursue.”

In total, the STC’s Kickstart bid to the Department for Work & Pensions helped secure funding for 19 tech businesses in the region to recruit 30 young people as apprentices.
